Forty-five bands of the Vegard-Kaplan system have been detected in a discharge through xenon containing traces of nitrogen (306). Intense emission of 13 bands of the system was observed from a high-voltage discharge through pure nitrogen at atmospheric pres sure (307). Ultrahigh-vacuum purification techniques have now permitted observation of triplet splitting of the A ZEU+ state from a 60 cps high-voltage discharge through pure nitrogen at a pressure of about 3 torr (308). 01 torr (218).
