In PROLOG the specification is also an executable specification. This has many advantages but results in the types of problems discussed above. Higher level specification techniques are no answer since if they are to remain executable the problem remains. What is needed therefore is a better environment which will provide debugging assistance to PROLOG programmers which understands their motives, identifies conceptual errors , and guides them to correct solutions. Traditional approaches to debugging such as the Programmer's Apprentice (Rich and Shrobe, 1978) and PROUST (Johnson and Soloway, 1983) assume that the program specification is correct and seek to identify errors in its realization as code.

1 The retrieval Model of PROLOG PRO/GRAMMAR identifies discrepancies between the system trace and the user d e s c r i p t i o n of execution generated by the system interpreter (possibly i n c o r r e c t ) . At the top level of the interpreter scheme is the goal s a t i s f a c t i o n m o d u l e . The objective of backtracking is to generate a new goal. It does this by finding the last successful goal call in the proof tree. It then resets the arguments to their previous values instantiated at the last successful goal c a l l .

The knowledge acquisition process is generally not a sequence of established actions, but it may involve the need for backtracking to earlier stages of the process to refine, revise, reformulate, or change already taken decisions. Therefore, it is a basically evolutionary, iterative process. There are often large gaps in the knowledge elicited. For example, in constructing Rl (McDermott, 1981), it has been found that experts were not able to give exceptions to rules. Even when pushed the experts still failed to provide all the exceptions but were able to identify such exceptions once the prototype system was demonstrated.
